Navigating the new world of a college campus can be overwhelming. When I stepped on the lawn of my college’s campus, I had a list of ten organizations I wanted to be a part of, about four majors I wanted to try and so many people I wanted to meet. I wanted to try new things and go new places. It was such an exciting time that I would definitely relive my college years over again, even though I know everything happened as it should.
1. Joining small organizations.
I joined a small sorority, a small group in Intervarsity and yearbook staff, all with less than 20 people each. These places were where I made my best friends, learned so much and found a place to develop and refine my skills. In small organizations, I was able to travel to new states and cities, attend conferences, volunteer and truly get to know the people I worked with and did life together. I wouldn’t trade these experiences for the world!
2. Getting a Spanish minor.
I think everyone should try to learn a language if they want to! I decided to stick with Spanish, since college is probably one of the only times I would be willing to sit and learn a new language. It’s where we have access to professors, learning centers and more to be able to practice a second language.
3. Going to cultural events and speakers on campus.
So many influential people come to speak on university campuses. When else to you have a chance to hear stories from Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, authors like Junot Díaz and other leaders and influencers around the world. Take life advice from them. Take their stories and their inspiration and apply it to what you want to do.
4. Making a blog.
I am so excited I kept up blogging in college and pursued it as a hobby and passion. It truly makes me come alive and I love learning more about blogging as it relates to my major and career.
5. Trying new things: exploring majors, attending conferences, taking Zumba classes and more.
All things things opened me up to discover some of the beauty in the world and how we can work together to make a difference by seeing what we are passionate about. While I’m still learning and always learning new things, it is so important to look back on all the new things that have entered our lives. These things get us out of our comfort zone and remind us to take risks and follow that calling everyday.
6. Taking a web publishing class.
This was my favorite class ever and even though I knew somethings about HTML & CSS already, I learned so much in this class and I think it really helped me with my blogging and knowledge of the web.
7. Serving over Spring Break with Intervarsity.
This was a week of crazy learning, reflecting, working, serving and just a week of amazing growth for me. It was a week full of stories and seeing the world from different perspectives. With a group of ten people, I helped out with an after-school tutoring program in Richmond, VA, getting to know the students and adults involved with the community there. It was such a community-driven, hard but fun week with friends and new faces.
8. Studying abroad.
I studied abroad in Spain and it changed my life in so many ways. I am still learning and recognizing how these changes play out in my life, but I have discovered my love of travel and cultures to an extent that has shifted my focus on how I live my life everyday.
9. Staying at home for the summer vacations.
In college, we all need some R&R. Taking a break from my career path and doing something different in the summers has kept me refreshed and energized for the school years. Also, it has been wonderful staying with family and keeping close by to the ones I love.
10. Being a communications major.
I love my major and the classes I have taken with it! Even though there are some negative things about my major and some things I wish I could change, I am so grateful for the classes that have taught me so many valuable things for working in strategic communications. It has guided me in what I want to do and where I want to go in life.
